Sues Sheriff for Barring ACLU Lawyers from Fayette County
Jail
On
March 9, the ACLU of Alabama filed a
lawsuit against Rodney Ingle, in his official capacity as Sheriff of
Fayette County, charging that the ACLU of Alabama and its attorneys have been
unconstitutionally deprived of their right to consult with inmates at the
Fayette County Jail. The suit comes after the organization was
repeatedly denied access to meet with inmates at the jail.

ACLU of Alabama Tells Legislature
Immigration Bill is Unconstitutional and Violates Federal Law
On March 10, the ACLU of
Alabama urged lawmakers to reject House Bill 56 and leave immigration policy
to the federal government. Jared Shepherd, Law Fellow at the ACLU of Alabama,
told a crowd gathered at the Alabama Statehouse that HB56 is unconstitutional
irresponsible legislation that will cost the State of Alabama and local governments across the
state precious tax dollars to defend in court. HB56 specifically violates the
Supremacy Clause of the U. S. Constitution and the First, Fourth and
Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution.

ACLU of Alabama Executive Director to
Speak at Reproductive Justice Forum
On March 24, ACLU-AL
Executive Director Olivia Turner will speak at a public forum about
reproductive freedom issues. The event
is free and open to the public and will be held at 7pm at the Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship of Montgomery (2810 Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery
