Send A Message: Demand lawmakers defend free speech in Alabama

Join us in calling on the Alabama Senate committee on State Governmental Affairs to vote NO for Senate Bill 4.

SB4, which was filed by Senator Gerald Allen, would make it a misdemeanor to display an unapproved flag on any public property. Approved flags include the National flag, the Freedom Flag, and the flag of the Boy Scouts, among others chosen by the committee. This ban may directly criminalize protestors from holding or flying flags on public property, as well as criminalizing Greek fraternities or sororities who display their flags on public campuses or other public property.

The ACLU of Alabama strongly opposes SB4. Flags are part of an individual's expression, and the ACLU of Alabama believes that these rights to expression are protected by the First Amendment, especially in public spaces.

Vote NO on SB4

Please oppose Senate Bill 4. This bill would make it a misdemeanor to display an unapproved flag on any public property.

Alabamians have the right to free speech, including carrying or displaying flags of their choosing in public spaces. But SB4 is puts criminal penalties on the this fundamental right.

I'm asking you to please vote NO on SB4 and protect free speech in Alabama. Flags are part of an individual's expression, and these rights to expression are protected by the First Amendment, especially in public spaces.

Sincerely,
