MONTGOMERY, Ala - The American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama is pleased to announce that following a nationwide search, current Acting Executive Director Randall Marshall has been selected to permanently fill the Executive Director position.

Board President Mark Lester noted in his announcement that "Marshall stood out as the person best qualified to head the organization at this crucial time with civil liberties under attack." Marshall will replace former Executive Director Susan Watson, who passed away last December.

Originally from Colorado, Marshall has been serving as Legal Director for the ACLU for 17 years – 4 in Alabama and 13 in Florida. Prior to working at the ACLU, Marshall had a long record of fighting for employment and civil rights at organizations like the Texas Rural Legal Aid Farm Worker Program and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality. He has been licensed to practice law for 35 years.

"Randall’s passion and commitment to the ACLU and its mission is unmatched. He has set the tone for the organization over the last several months, and we are excited to continue expanding our work in Alabama under his leadership," said JaTaune Bosby, Director of Development.

During his time at the ACLU of Alabama, Marshall has brought litigation to establish equal rights for the LGBTQ community, to challenge policies that have led to mass incarceration and the overcrowding of Alabama's prisons, to protect freedom of speech and religion, and to ensure access to abortion and reproductive choices.

"I am honored to accept this position and look forward to leading the ACLU of Alabama in the continuing struggle to protect our civil liberties. Now more than ever, the work we do is important to ensure our democracy is strong and vital."

Marshall will now fully step into the Executive Director role to steer the ship as the ACLU of Alabama continues its legal, legislative, and advocacy programs to preserve and promote civil liberties for all.
