Moms Matter Listening Sessions

Your story matters– and we’re listening.

Moms Matter is a data collection and storytelling project that works to address Alabama’s maternal health crisis. Through listening sessions in rural and urban areas across the state, we are asking Black Alabamians about the barriers they face in accessing maternal health care and the barriers they face once they are in the healthcare system.

These sessions are designed to create safer spaces where affected individuals– particularly Black, Brown, rural, and immigrant communities– can openly share their experiences with pregnancy, postpartum care, infant health, and pregnancy loss.

Alabama is the most dangerous state in America to be pregnant or give birth. It has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the country and limited access to maternal healthcare, with 34% of counties designated as maternal health deserts. Alabama has 65 maternal deaths per 100 thousand births, nearly double the national rate. And for Black women in Alabama, that number skyrockets to 100 deaths per 100 thousand births.

Our goal is to center real stories and uplift community-led solutions to help shape policy proposals that meet the real needs of Alabama's most marginalized families. Listening to the lived experiences of impacted families is essential to building strong, transformative legislation that ensures every Alabama family has a chance to thrive.

Moms Matter is more than just a listening session– it’s an invitation to be part of a movement for maternal and infant justice in Alabama.
