On Tuesday, July 23rd, the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham announced plans to close their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices and reassign staff to other responsibilities. Today with our partners, we filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in Alabama State Conference of the NAACP et al. v. Marshall et al to pause the state of Alabama from criminalizing the assistance of voters with their absentee ballot applications.
The lawsuit filed today challenges SB 1 as violating the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution, Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act, and the Help America Vote Act of 2002.
