HB270 – In-Person Early Voting for Statewide Elections

  • Position: Support
  • Bill Number: HB270
  • Latest Update: February 5, 2026
Thumbs up on green cut out of the shape of Alabama

Background:  HB270 would create an in-person early voting option for general and special elections (excluding municipal elections), beginning with the November 2028 General Election. It requires counties to operate early voting centers during a set window (from the Saturday 10 days before Election Day through the Thursday 5 days before Election Day), and to operate at least one early voting center per 100,000 residents, with locations set by the county commission. It also directs the Secretary of State to adopt rules to protect the integrity of the process.

Our Position:   We support HB270. Alabama voters deserve more accessible, flexible options to cast a ballot. People working hourly jobs, seniors, disabled voters, and voters with transportation or scheduling barriers rely on early voting to ensure their voice is heard in elections. Early voting can reduce long lines on Election Day, improve voter confidence, and strengthen participation while still maintaining secure, consistent election administration.
