SB21 – Barring Naturalized Citizens from Public Office

  • Position: Oppose
  • Bill Number: SB21
  • Latest Update: February 5, 2026
Thumbs down on red cut out of the shape of Alabama

Background: SB21 proposes a constitutional amendment that would add a “natural born citizen” requirement for a wide range of state and local offices. This includes statewide offices like Governor, state legislators, judges, and several local offices such as sheriffs, district attorneys, circuit clerks, and constables.

Position: We oppose SB21. Naturalized citizens are fully American and fully Alabamian. They work, pay taxes, raise families, and serve their community. This amendment would treat them as second-class citizens by banning them from public service. SB21 is an unnecessary and extreme restriction that would shrink the pool of qualified leaders and exclude entire communities from representation.
