HB258 (2018) - Creationism in Schools

  • Status: Failed
  • Position: Oppose
  • Session: 2018 Regular
  • Latest Update: January 30, 2018

This bill would allow public schools to teach the “Biblical theory of creationism” if they also teach evolution.

We strongly oppose this legislation that would place religious beliefs alongside sound scientific principles in our classrooms. Parents, not public schools, are entitled to instill religious beliefs in their children. If passed, it would likely be challenged because similar laws have already been declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

This bill has been referred to the House committee on Education Policy. Since it has not been brought up for a vote, it is likely dead for this session.
