ACLU-AL responds to Ten Commandments bill passing

Yesterday, the Alabama House voted in favor of a bill so that “the right to display the Ten Commandments on property owned or administrated by a public school or public body is not restrained or abridged.” This bill was later amended to allow for other religious displays.

Tomorrow, students around the country are planning to participate in the National Walkout, a coordinated protest and memorial to the 17 students who were killed at Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. The walkout is scheduled to last for 17 minutes to honor each student.

ACLU Sues Alabama for Discrimination Against Transgender People

The ACLU and ACLU of Alabama filed a lawsuit today challenging Alabama’s policy of restricting access to driver’s licenses for transgender people that accurately reflect their gender identity. The lawsuit, Corbitt v. Taylor, was filed on behalf of three people who experienced this discrimination.
